Ways to Volunteer
Education
- Adventures in Learning — Volunteers are needed to pour coffee and water during lunch time at Adventures in Learning, which is held at First Baptist Church, 29th and Minnesota on the 3rd Friday of each month.
- Adventures in Learning — Volunteers are needed to assist with registration at Adventures in Learning, which is held at First Baptist Church, 29th and Minnesota, KCK on the 3rd Friday of each month. Volunteers would commit to being there three to four months of the year from 8:30 until 10:00 a.m.
- Adventures in Learning Planning Committee — Volunteers are needed to join the planning committee for Adventures in Learning. This involves a monthly meeting, contacting speakers, and attending Adventures in Learning the 3rd Friday of each month at First Baptist Church, 29th and Minnesota, KCK.
- Speakers and musical entertainment — The Adventures in Learning planning committee is interested in speakers on various topics of interest – travelogues, local history, health, etc. The committee also seeks interesting luncheon speakers and musical entertainment.
- Creative Classes Committee — Volunteers are needed to join the Creative Classes Planning Committee. This involves planning the Fall and Spring Creative Classes, determining the types of classes, securing instructors, and scheduling the classes and locations. This committee meetings three to four times per year.
- Class Instructor — Volunteers are needed to teach classes for four Fall and Spring Creative Classes. Classes typically provide 12 hours of instruction — one hour for 12 weeks or two hours for six weeks. Instructors are currently needed for wood carving, and the committee is open to other class possibilities.
Office
- Office volunteers — Volunteers help with a variety of tasks including copying, filing, collating, and various other tasks as they arise. Knowledge and experience with Microsoft Word is preferable. Time slots include 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Wednesday and Thursday, 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. on Monday, Tuesday and Thursday afternoons.
- Newsletter — Volunteers are needed to help collate and prepare the monthly newsletter for mailing. This occurs from about 10 to 11:30 a.m. in the week to ten days before Adventures in Learning.
Health Enrichment
- Blood Pressures — Monthly blood pressures are offered at Adventures in Learning on the 3rd Friday of each month from 8:30 – 10 a.m. Retired health professionals are needed to take a turn for three or fours months of the year. Stethoscopes and cuffs are provided. Adventures in Learning is held at First Baptist Church, 29th and Minnesota, KCK.
- Health Enrichment Committee — Committee members are needed to help plan and implement various health programs of the Shepherd’s Center. Involves monthly planning meetings and contacting speakers for Health Education Workshops.
- Health Enrichment — Volunteer is needed to coordinate the Health Screenings schedule for Adventures in Learning. This involves contacting volunteers to do blood pressures, and hospitals and home health agencies to do blood sugar screenings. Practicing health professionals are contacted to provide various screenings such as cholesterol, eye pressure, hearing, foot balance, etc.
Home Service Volunteers
- Minor Repair — Handyman volunteers assist older persons with minor repairs such as minor plumbing or electrical, taking down and putting up drapes, yard work, changing light bulbs, hanging mirrors, doing touch-up painting, etc. Jobs are small repair jobs and normally take one to two hours to complete.
Fundraising
- Annual Campaign — Volunteers are needed to make calls to Shepherd’s Center participants to raise funds for the Shepherd’s Center of KCK. Volunteers are part of a team and participate in a six-week campaign with weekly meetings. Report meetings include refreshments and door prizes, and the final meeting includes a brunch.
- Annual Used Book and Bric-a-Brac Sale — This is held in March or April each year. Volunteers are needed to pick up donations, help sort books and bric-a-brac, and help customers on sale days.
